Saint Isaac's Cathedral or Isaakievsky Sobor (Исаакиевский Собор) - is the largest orthodox basilica and the fourth largest cathedral in the world. Saint Isaac was the patron saint of Peter the Great, who had been born on the saint's feast day. The cathedral's foundation was strengthened by driving 25,000 piles into the fenland of Saint Petersburg. Its dome is plated with pure gold. We saw Field Marshal Kutuzov's grave inside, who beat Napoleon in 1812. We posed outside the cathedral's massive bronze gate. We were renting a flat close-by.
