in Venice, May 2003

This was our second ever joint holiday. Thelma was radiant. Our first holiday trip had been in the late autumn of 2002 to Barcelona, but I (we) haven't been able to find any of the pictures taken there, unfortunately. In Venice, we rented an excellent old flat in a non-touristy area with the help of a BBC colleague in the Cannaregio district, the northernmost of the six historic sestieri of old Venice. This was the original Venetian Ghetto, where Jews were compelled to live until Napoleon liberated them. A very peaceful and pleasant area of Venice. We bought fresh fish in the central market and cooked it in the flat.
