Central Square of Pécs, Hungary

From László on 3rd November 2022 Central Square of Pécs, Hungary

Széchenyi Square - an aerial photo from the internet. It shows the nooks where I walked around with my sweet Thelma in 2009. The Zsolnay well is in the very top left corner of the smaller extension of the square, where we took one of our pictures at this famous well. It takes me back to that lovely sunny day with her. Her presence made the day lovely. We walked around the blue-roofed "Mosque of Pasha Qasim" - in the foreground - which now is called the Candlemas Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was a mosque in the 16–17th centuries during the Ottoman occupation. It is one of the symbols of the city. The mosque was converted into a Catholic church in 1702, after Habsburg-Hungarian troops reconquered the city. The minaret was destroyed by the Jesuits in 1766. It is one of the largest Ottoman constructions remaining in Hungary. It is the northernmost old mosque building still standing in Europe.
